To provide operational funding for the Healing Place, a new model for comprehensive detoxification, rehabilitation, and shelter of homeless individuals suffering from alcohol and drug problems.

To support the North Carolina Chapter of The Nature Conservancy in its efforts to protect critical natural lands. On the Albemarle Peninsula of North Carolina, The Conservancy is developing strategies to protect existing natural areas from climate change and rising seas.

North Carolina Child Advocacy Institute (NCCAI) $25,000
To support operations aimed at making North Carolina a better place to be a child and to raise children. NCCAI strives to improve the ways in which government and public policy affect the lives and life prospects of all NC children and youth.

To fund a conference addressing the issue of dislocated workers in North Carolina. The Rural Center develops, promotes, and implements sound economic strategies to improve the quality of life of rural North Carolinians.

To provide continued support of the North Carolina expansion of DonorsChoose, as well as national expansion efforts. DonorsChoose provides an online forum where public school teachers and individual donors connect to give students the resources they need to learn.

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, NC State University $10,000
To support the operations of NC State’s new state-of-the-art educational research institute. Named after Bill and Ida Friday, the state’s “First Family of Education,” the institute is designed to identify and formulate innovative solutions to today’s most pressing educational challenges.

The Mariposa School for Children with Autism $20,000
To facilitate expansion efforts, including a move this year to a new, larger building to accommodate rapid growth. The Mariposa School provides intensive, individualized instruction to children with autism.

To support the operations of the Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina. FoR ENC is designed to serve as a catalyst for economic and entrepreneurial growth in Eastern North Carolina.

UNC School of Public Health
$20,000

To fund a special project, Quality in Pediatric Subspecialty Care (QPSC), an effort to radically improve and standardize health care delivery to children with serious medical conditions. The American Board of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill bring together expertise in data collection and quality, collaborative learning, and online teaching to provide physicians with a robust set of tools and training to establish quality improvement programs in their clinical practices.

The grant also aided development of a Rich Internet Application to support physicians' exploration of data used for quality improvement. This cutting-edge application only requires connection to the Internet and a web-browser to bring QPSC data to the physician's desktop.
